The latest buzz doing the rounds in Kollywood is about filmmaker Bharat Bala's upcoming Tamil thriller 'Mariyaan' which has music by Oscar winner composer AR Rahman. The film, which has Rajinikanth's son-in-law Dhanush as the lead star, revolves around the hardships of the South Indian fishing community in countries such as Nigeria, Sudan and Libya.
In the movie, Dhanush plays a poor fisherman belonging from a remote village who is in need of a job. 'Mariyaan' is shot both in Sudan and in Kanyakumari, as Bharat Bala was particular that filming had to take place in two contrasting terrains. The sandy rugged locations in the movie were shot in Liberia and Sudan and several portions in South India.
In early 2011, filmmaker Bharat Bala read about a real life incident that took place regarding three immigrant oil workers from India who were kidnapped and taken to the Darfur region of Sudan and how they had managed to escape.
While still working on his script, the director met the former hostages who were held for a total of 21 days under captivity. Bala narrated the first half of 'Mariyaan' to actor Dhanush who agreed to work in the film.
Bala was also vocal about the fact that he drew inspiration from the famous 2008 French-Liberian film 'Johnny Mad Dog', which starred a real life group of LURD child soldiers and subsequently chose to have them and also the cinematographer of the film, Marc Koninckx, both to be a part of his venture 'Mariyaan'.
The film which is produced by Venu Ravichandran will also star Parvathi Menon playing the role of 'Panimalar', and has noted actors Salim Kumar, Appukutty and Jagan playing key roles in it.
