PM should set the record straight on Coalgate row: Bhupendra Chaubey
PM should set the record straight on Coalgate row: Bhupendra Chaubey
Can the PM distance himself from the Coalgate controversy?

How is it that records of 157 private companies which applied for coal blocks but lost out are missing? How is it that key files with the signature of the Prime Minister have gone missing? Can the PM as coal minister between 2006 and 2009 pass the buck? CNN-IBN's national bureau chief Bhupendra Chaubey joined IBNLive readers for an interaction on the issue.

Q. No he cannot and should not. The more he runs away from answering the basic queries, he is only playing into the hands of opposition. He is staking all his credibility which he has earned over a period of his life time. He should come clean and tell the truth. Yes, coal controversy is as black as coal in which all the parties are involved. Asked by: S ESHWAR

A. hi Eshwar, as PM, job of Manmohan Singh is to address concerns, assuage fears of people. No one benefits, if he remains silent. He should come and set the record straight.

Q. Do you think the people will be convinced that the PM need not answer every question for the portfolios he holds? Will the people be convinced that he or his govt does not have any hand in the missing files. Will the people still believe that the PM is not corrupt? Isn't it true that the PM had accommodated Raja and vouched for him (during the second term) and then drop him due to corruption charges? Also how can the PM be ignorant of coal mine sale, when he was holding the portfolio? Asked by: EM

A. PM for far too long has managed his silence as his virtue. Now I think though, time has come for PM to set record straight.

Q. As leader of the govt, the onus was on the PM to ensure the safety and security of the files. How is it that the Congress and govt claim that the PM need not address each and every issue of the portfolio he holds. If the PM is holding a portfolio, it is his responsibility to ensure files are kept secure. Especially since these files were related to the biggest scams in the recent times. Your thoughts? Asked by: EM

A. I do believe that pm has made a mistake by just not communicating with people. The triumvarate of Sonia, Rahul and Manmohan just don't speak. I think in todays' times that's a liability.

Q. Can the PM take responsibility for the missing files and resign?. opposition stalling parliament on this issue is thoroughly justified. This Govt has given up even the basic accountability. Asked by: Reddy

A. Don't think he is going to resign. But it will be good if he sets the record straight.

Q. Is it possible that matter being subjudice he would not like to add to the confusion and go by the commitments being made to Judiciary and allow law to take its own course? Asked by: sundar1950in

A. That's a tested position often taken by people. But I don't think it will work anymore.

Q. Is it likely that the PM does not have full info and is collecting the same before he throws light on the subject? Asked by: sundar1950in

A. Don't think so. I think PM is worried that if he gives in to the opposition now, then he will have to keep giving in.

Q. Why should he distance himself when the implications of the court proceedings have a direct reflections on his government? Asked by: sundar1950in

A. I agree, that's why I say he has to speak, he is going to be speaking tomorrow now.

Q. No way. As LoP in Lok Sabha pointed out he had already said in the house that he will act on it. Will it not be fair for the then department head at the GOI throw some light on what the GOI intends to do further? Asked by: sundar1950in

A. At the moment case is related to missing files. Should explain that.

A. Yes, PM is head of govt. He should therefore speak.

What's your reaction?
