Guwahati: At least 52 people were killed and 27 injured when a bus fell into a river near the Sarupeta in Barpeta district of Lower Asom on Wednesday night.
The bus, packed with more than 80 people, was headed for a wedding party in a village near Sarupeta.
"As the bus was travelling on a village road, it fell into a river while crossing a bridge," Additional Superintendent of Police Jiban Singh said. “The bus had almost crossed the small bridge, when the soil, softened by heavy overnight rain, gave in resulting in the bus plunging ten feet into the ditch,” he added.
This is said to be one of the worst mishaps in Asom in recent times.
Among the 52 dead were 24 women and 10 children. The accident occurred about two kilometers from the bride's house, the groom had been admitted to the hospital in critical state.
Villagers rushed to the spot immediately and rescued the injured people from the bus which was completely immersed in water.
Darkness and heavy rains cramped the rescue work, 47 bodies were recovered on Thursday after the bus was lifted from the river.
Some of the injured were shifted to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital(GMCH).
