The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed appeals from Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee and his wife, Rujira Banerjee, challenging the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) summons related to a school jobs scam.
The couple contested the ED’s requirement for them to appear in New Delhi, asserting that their ordinary residence is in Kolkata. Justices Bela Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma delivered the verdict after reserving judgment on August 13, according to Live Law.
The case involves allegations of irregularities in the recruitment process for primary teachers in West Bengal, where candidates reportedly paid bribes for job placements.
The ED has been investigating the matter, linking the Banerjees to a company, Leaps and Bounds, which allegedly facilitated the diversion of funds in the scam. Amid political uproar over the job scam probe, TMC alleged that the Centre is misusing investigative agencies to target political opponents.
The scam came to the limelight after the CBI arrested former state education minister Partha Chatterjee and several officials from the West Bengal School Service Commission over the suspicion of their involvement in the illegal teacher recruitment in July 2022.
