New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrested businessman Abhishek Verma in connection with the Navy War Room leak case.
Verma was called to the CBI headquarters on Friday afternoon for questioning, after which he was placed under arrest.
The CBI said his involvement with many top naval officers has been established.
In fact Navy Captain Kulbhushan Parashar, one of the accused in the War Room leak case, is suspected to be closely linked to Verma although the latter has denied it.
The Navy War Room leak case is one of the most high-profile espionage case and even navy chief Admiral Arun Prakash's role has come under the scanner.
In this case secret documents have been leaked from the Indian Navy's Directorate of Operations (popularly known as The Navy War Room) and shown how deep rooted is the rot inside the military establishment.
Questions are also being raised about the intentions of the Navy and more significantly, against the Ministry of Defence.
Evidence shows that efforts were made to protect main accused Ravi Shankaran, a nephew of Naval Chief Arun Prakash's wife.
According to the CBI Shankaran is now hiding in London.
Parashar, too, left the country for London in the last week of March and was only arrested by CBI on April 5 upon his return.
According to Pranab Mukherjee, the Court of Inquiry was held in March 2005 and Shankaran - declared a proclaimed offender by court and hunted by the CBI - was named as main accused even then.
But that did not prevent the Indian navy to ask Shankaran's company Shanx Oceaneering to participate in a Navy's tender process in August 2005.
Verma was earlier booked by the Enforcement Directorate for fraud and foreign exchange violations.
His father is the late Congress MP Shrikant verma and his mother Veena Verma was until recently a member of the Rajya Sabha.
