New Delhi: A woman was tonsured and paraded in a village in Bihar's Vaishali district after she was accused of stealing bananas.
Desri Devi, 55, begs for a living in Balua-Basant village, a PTI report said. She was allegedly caught stealing bananas from the field of a farmer named Dinesh Rai on Friday.
Desri, a widow, was then taken to the panchayat chief’s house and asked to pay a fine of Rs 2500, by the chief's husband Satyanarayan Chaurasia.
When Desri said she didn’t have the money, a barber was called to tonsure her. "Some people wanted me to be stripped and then paraded on the streets, but others stopped them from doing that. Still, I was paraded in the lanes of the village," she said in a police complaint which names 10 people including Dinesh Rai and Chaurasia as accused.
District magistrate Lallan Singh and SP Anupama S Nilekar who visited the village on Monday, said Rai has been arrested.
The District Magistrate has asked the block development officer of Lalganj to allot a Desri a house under the Indira Awas Yojana and include her name in the list of people living below poverty line.
