Gandhinagar: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate L K Advani has proposed that Lok Sabha and state Assemblies should have a fixed tenure.
Addressing the media after casting his vote in Shahpur in the Ahmedabad (West) Lok Sabha constituency at about 0930 hrs IST along with his by his wife Kamla Advani, the BJP leader also proposed that there should not be mid-term elections if the government falls.
Instead, Advani said, any party which can provide a stable government should be allowed to do so.
"There should be a fixed tenure for all Assemblies and the Lok Sabha. If the government loses majority mid-term then any party that can muster majority should form the government. It won't be a big issue even if there are two or three governments within the five-year term. Elections for Lok Sabha and state Assemblies should also take place together," said Advani.
Advani called on the people to take more active part in the elections and vote in large numbers.
"I am of the view that elections should be held in February like they used to be held earlier. More people will be able to take part in elections and even the administration won't be adversely affected," he said.
He also sounded confident that the NDA will be able to form the next government.
"I am confident that the BJP will be the biggest party in 15th Lok Sabha. NDA will be the biggest alliance. The voters will give the verdict to the NDA," the 81-year-old said.
The BJP leader is contesting from Gandhinagar in Gujarat. All 26 seats in the state are voting on Thursday.
