Kolkata: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat on Friday said the vexed issue of land acquisition for setting up special economic zones (SEZ) would be discussed at the party's politburo meeting next week.
Amid protests by the Left Front partners on amending the Land Ceiling Act in West Bengal to pave way for the SEZs mooted by reformist Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, Karat said: "All SEZ approvals have been held in abeyance by the central government, whether it is the one by the Salim Group (proposed in Nandigram) or any other, till all matters are discussed and decided with changes." "We have also submitted our plan (on SEZ)," Karat added.
Speaking on the land ceiling amendment bill to relax the norms for acquisition of large areas of land, veteran CPI-M leader Jyoti Basu said bilateral talks would be held with Left Front constituents and it has to be ascertained through discussion whether it could be amended.
"There are differences among the left front constituents (about relaxation of the land ceiling). It was decided that bilateral talks would be held with them. After the talks we will decide whether amendments can be made in the bill," Basu said.
In the Left Front meeting in Kolkata, the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Forward Bloc put their foot down on the chief minister's proposal on land ceiling relaxation.
Meanwhile, Bhattacharya has reiterated his desire to hold talks with the opposition parties on land acquisition in Singur and Nandigram.
