BANGALORE: Governor H R Bhardwaj has urged the Union government to upgrade the Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Bangalore (IIPMB), as a unique university to provide plantation and agribusiness education in the country.Delivering the convocation address at the 11th convocation of the institute on Saturday, he said the government should support it financially. The Governor lauded the efforts of IIPMB in setting its own milestones in agri-business and plantation education and also reaching rural masses through various programmes.Additional Secretary (Plantations), Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Madhusudan Prasad said, “Plantation sector in India has witnessed major changes over the years in terms of global competition, tariff structure, price volatility, innovations and technology, ownership pattern and management structure. Such changes have exposed the sector to a new operational setting. This setting is subjected to certain challenges which should be appropriately addressed for the sector to perform adequately.”He called upon the graduates to provide leadership to the industry and urged them to strive for the improvement of plantations and agri-business sector.This year 149 students of PGDM-ABPM graduated from the institute. Smruthi Shrinivasan of PGDM-ABPM 2009-11 and Preeti of 2010-12 batch received gold medals.
